Faebhas, Gaelic for goodness, excellence, improvement, is an Embedded Software Training and Services company with an impressive list of clientele. They are based in Wanborough, Swindon in the U.K.

They provide on-site and public training for Embedded Engineers and Software Developers to help them create secure connected devices. They are also founding members of the IoT Security Foundation.

Feabhas’ courses include embedded and real-time programming with ‘C’ or C++, test programming with Python, software design using the Unified Modelling Language (UML), design patterns, secure Linux/Android development, and ARM-Cortex (licensed by ARM).

Zerynth – Kickstart your IoT solution

Zerynth is the result of a successful Kicsktarter campaign from 2015 when it was called Viper.

Zerynth delivers all of the components needed to easily create a smart device that can be controlled via a smartphone or tablet. This includes:

  1. Zerynth Studio – a software suite for developing IoT and embedded solutions in Python to make objects ‘connected’ and ‘smart’
  2. Zerynth Shield – an Arduino and Particle compatible shield with microphone, temperature, light, touch sensors, IR receiver, Piezo buzzer, IR LED emitter, and a port for Adafruit Neopixel LEDs

Stoorm5 – openly taking Industrial IoT by storm?

Stoorm5 is a small company based in Bologna, Italy delivering an Industrial IoT platform and services using open technologies.

Aldo Campi, their CEO, has a Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from University of Bologna. He also did a Postdoctoral Research Fellowship at the same University as part of the Center for Industrial Research on Information and Communication Technologies (CIRI ICT) [1]

Carlo Giannelli is Founder Partner & Technical Manager at Stoorm5 was a Researcher at the University of Ferrara working on Cloud Computing (OpenStack), Mobile Computing (Wireless Networking), and Location Aware Computing (802.11/BT) [2]

Here are the products and services they offer:

  • Industry Manager – an Industrial IoT platform with an SDK
  • ICT Guard – an ICT monitoring system
  • Cloud Energy – an IoT solution for energy monitoring

  • “Stored data can be accessed and integrated with third-party software and IT systems exploiting REST API, MQTT and AMQP protocols, or exploiting our Java and C SDK. Any data sent to the Stoorm5 platform is securely stored and available in real-time on SQL and/or MongoDB NoSQL database, as preferred by the final user.” [4]

Lemonbeat – get Smart… Device Language

Lemonbeat is based in Germany and has developed a Smart Device Language (LsDL)  which is an application layer on top of various IPv6-based physical layers to support IoT device and machine communication.

Their “LsDL application layer enables direct, intelligent linking of devices, reducing reliance on clouds or expensive gateways.” [1] They “want LsDL to become a standard language for how intelligent devices communicate. That is why the specification is free to all, and is currently being discussed by W3C as the basis for a possible standard.”

Their site describes:

  1. LsDL – a freely available interface
  2. Radio – a patented, secure long range, high bandwidth, low battery usage radio standard
  3. Firmware – modules for IoT devices to communicate using LsDL and a Lemonbeat radio or IP over Ethernet, WLAN, LoRa, etc.

To support rapid development using the above, they provide implementations of the LsDL

  1. Chip – an ARM® Cortex®-M3 processor based SIP Module with 863-870 Mhz radio
  2. Stack – Sub-1 GHz Software Stack

FreeWave – enabling IoT before it was fashionable

FreeWave Technologies develops industrial and secure wireless radios, wireless Ethernet bridges, and a software toolset for IoT and M2M communications across a wide number of industries. They were founded in 1993 and based in Boulder, Colorado.

FreeWave has products supporting a number of different frequencies:

  1. Licensed (1.4 GHz, 455 MHz and 869 MHz)
  2. Unlicensed (900 MHz, 2.4 GHz and 5.8 GHz)
  3. Defense (225-400 MHz, 1.3 GHz and 3.4 GHz)

Their free IoT Platform software application FreeWave Tool Suite “simplifies and expedites configuration and management of FreeWave radio networks” [1] and includes Configurator, Setup Terminal, and Diagnostics. It appears to be a Windows GUI, not Web based.

AllThingsTalk – with this platform they do!

AllThingsTalk delivers a scalable IoT Application Enablement Platform (AEP) which can be used as an agile, rapid prototyping environment, or as a full service roll-out of connected products.

AllThingsTalk connects devices over a variety of wireless networks and manages the devices and users, organising access and usage of the collected data. AllThingsTalk Cloud is a Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) through either the AllThingsTalk brand maker.allthingstalk.com or it can be privately labeled.

To support rapid prototyping, AllThingsTalk sells Rapid Development Kits (RDKs) which, in combination with AllThingsTalk Maker, helps Developers and companies create IoT solutions. “The combination of the Maker Application and the Rapid Development Kits are recognized by LoRaWAN™ based Network Providers as a great market development tool.” [1]

AllThingsTalk is a Belgian company based in Ghent with a branch office in Belgrade, Serbia where a team of Developers are situated. They partner with public LoRaWAN™ based Network Service Providers covering Belgium, London UK and a private LoRaWAN™ partner offering worldwide coverage.

WayLay – making the way for Enterprise IoT

WayLay is based in Ghent, Belgium and founded in 2014 by Piet Vandaele and Veselin Pizurica both “former employees of Alcatel-Lucent and were involved in the remote management of DSL routers and networks, where the emphasis was on real-time monitoring of individual devices and DSL lines” [1]

WayLay provides a SIGFOX certified Enteprise IoT platform with support for data storage, visualization, analytics, rules engine, and open and secure REST-based APIs. They also have a library of off the shelf connectors to integrate sensors and actuators.

They partner with a few companies including the Belgian company Solvice “to offer a comprehensive route optimization solution for sensor-enabled remote assets” [2] and SICAP to offer “comprehensive Internet-of-Things application enablement solution.” [3]

JpU Io – enabling secure IoT for mobile operators

JpU is a startup in stealth-mode based in Petah Tikva, Israel. As such, I cannot find much info on them but here’s what I gleaned from their site + videos.

“JpU equips mobile operators with new tools and services that can be offered to IoT customers, creating new sources of revenue. Our patent pending technology reduces current operator costs while adding IoT functionality to the mobile network” [1]

“We introduce a new level of security for IoT devices in the network: JpU IoT connected devices like cars and sensors get a new layer of security and protection against hacking, theft and vandalism.” [1]

Their Network Access Gateway provides SIM-based security to IoT Networks and works with any device, any mobile network (GSM/UMTS/LTE, LPWAN, NB-IoT)

Tismo – taking IoT products from concept to product

Thanks to Venki Venkataraman. head IoT Products and Solutions group at Tismo Technologies for suggesting the company. They are a product engineering service provider in IoT for Consumer, Commercial and Industrial with an R&D center in Bangalore, India.

From their Web site it appears this company can take an idea and deliver a complete IoT solution including hardware and software to support it. They were founded in 2009.

Tismo lists a large number of skills and experiences ranging from hardware design to firmware development and application development. Technologies supported are also quite wide with the following listed:

Wia – get your IoT solution up and running quickly

Wia is a cloud platform enabling Developers to create a scalable back end service to rapidly launch Internet of Things (IoT) products.

Functionality includes analytics via a real-time dashboard, device management, event logging, debugging, and real-time push notifications.

With their simple APIs and platform developers can create solutions that capture and analyze IoT device data, diagnose events from devices in real-time, control devices via 2-way streams, and store data in Wia’s Redshift or Postgres database or in their own database.

Wia provides their APIs openly via a Github repo and support multiple languages including Java, Objective C / Swift, Javascript / Node.js, Python, HTML5 for development targeted to Apple iOS or Android platforms. Interfaces supported include REST, MQTT, Web Hooks, and Web Sockets.
